ST. STANISLAUS DIOCESAN CEMETERY
St. Stanislaus Cemetery was developed by St. Stanislaus Church as a parish cemetery. The first burial was recorded in 1898. For many years there was no general maintenance provided. The ground became very unsightly and was referred to as a “sandbur patch.”

In 1935, a group of parishioners organized a committee to clean up the cemetery. These same men organized the St. Stanislaus Cemetery Association for the purpose of improving and maintaining the cemetery grounds. With the help of fund raisers, donations and their own labor, fences were erected, the roads were improved and monuments were placed.

The monies were invested into a Perpetual Care Fund for the purpose of ensuring future care of the cemetery. A percentage of all future grave sales were also to be included in this fund.

In the 1982 Bishop Andrew G. Grutka established St. Stanislaus Cemetery as a Diocesan Cemetery. Therefore all Catholics and their families are able to be buried on sacred ground in a Catholic Cemetery. A Diocesan Cemetery is a place for all Catholics and their families to be buried.

Three new sections were developed along with many improvements. On May 26, 1986 the Mausoleum was dedicated, the Mausoleum has 180 crypts. In 2009 the unborn baby section project was completed and dedicated by Bishop Dale Melczek. An Elberton Gray statue of Jesus holding a baby in his arms was set on a granite base. In August 2012 a Columbarium was built and holds 64 niches. Throughout the years the cemetery became self supporting and gained the reputation as a beautiful cemetery.

Ss Peter and Paul Parish can trace their history back 173 years when the first Mass was celebrated in a log cabin in Turkey Creek (Merrillville) 1841. The settlement of German immigrants occasionally had a visiting priest to say Mass for them. 1
